Mostar

Where Croatia is polished for the tourist industry, Bosnia is not. The first town we visited, Mostar still bears the very visible signs of war. Bullet holes in walls, buildings gutted by fire and grave yards dotting the hills.

The main attraction of Mostar is the huge bridge in the middle of town. It was destroyed during the Bosnian war.

And then rebuilt afterwards.

It’s also famous for the people who jump off the bridge. This man, however, never did. He paraded out in his tight speedos, got up on the bridge, showed off his package, stretched and then got down again. This happened about three times before we stopped watching.

What really made Mostar was our hotel owner, Taj ("Like the Taj Mahal without the Mahal") I don’t think I’d be going too far to say he loved me and the feeling was very much returned. He gave Angus and I “the most beautiful room” and even drove us to the station in his vintage red Mercedes.

Taj also recommended his favourite restaurant. Good for two reasons: 1) they serve a meat schnitzel, stuffed with ham, sour cream and cheese with fries which is pretty much Angus’ favourite cholesterol packed meal. 2) the waiter uses a dustbuster to clean the table!
