Sarajevo

Sarajevo is one of the most powerful places I’ve ever visited. During the Bosnian War, it was under siege for nearly four years. Its citizens had very little contact with the outside world and had to survive on supplies airlifted in by the UN and transported through an 800 metre long tunnel from Croatia. The city is still recovering but the people couldn’t be more welcoming. The nightlife is great, the cafe scene vibrant and there’s far less double denim and mullets than in other parts of Eastern Europe.

This is the tunnel that once connected Sarajevo to Croatia.

Sarajevo is also the site of the assassination that sparked World War I. This is where Gavriol Princip shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Having just been to Beijing, it’s incredible to believe that 24 years ago Sarajevo hosted the Winter Olympics. The people are still incredibly proud of the event and the logo is all around the city. The venues haven’t fared so well. Most have fallen into disrepair... Homebush in 2024 perhaps?

This is the Olympic mascot, Vučko. It’s unfortunate on some t-shirts, the skis end up looking like a gun. He can also been seen on the coffee mug, badge and other assorted Olympic merchandise Angus purchased.
